When we pour a glass of McClain Cellars wine, we're not just sharing a beverage—we're telling a story of perseverance, pride, and purpose. Being a Black-owned winery in California means something deeply personal to us, and today we want to invite you into that story.
For far too long, the wine industry has told a narrow narrative. Walk through most tasting rooms, and you'll notice the absence of diverse voices, faces, and stories. That's not the wine world we believe in, and it's certainly not the one we're building here at McClain Cellars. When we became proud members of the African-American Vintners Association, we made a commitment to our community, our craft, and everyone who believes excellence shouldn't come with invisible barriers.
Why Representation Matters in Wine
The wine industry is more than vineyards and barrels—it's an expression of culture, heritage, and identity. Yet Black winemakers and vineyard owners remain dramatically underrepresented in California's wine country. The numbers tell the story: fewer than 2% of California's wineries are Black-owned. That statistic drove us, and continues to fuel our mission every single day.
When our wine-club members visit us in Buellton, Solvang, Irvang, or Laguna Beach, many share how meaningful it is to support a winery that looks like their community—or simply one that refuses to accept the status quo. That feedback reminds us why this work matters beyond the tasting room.
Craftsmanship Without Compromise
Here's what we want to be crystal clear about: being a Black-owned winery doesn't mean we're making a statement at the expense of quality. Quite the opposite. Every vintage we release is held to the same rigorous standards as any celebrated California winery. Our passion for winemaking excellence is non-negotiable.
We source from premium vineyards, employ time-honored techniques, and invest in the education and expertise that produce wines worthy of your table. We're not here to prove anything except that passion, heritage, and world-class wine belong together—always have, always will.
Heritage, Faith, and Family at the Heart
McClain Cellars was built on four pillars that guide everything we do: Family, Faith, Friends, and Freedom. These aren't just words on our website—they're the foundation of how we operate, how we treat our community, and how we approach every vintage.
Our commitment to diversifying the wine landscape comes from a place of genuine belief that the industry is stronger, richer, and more authentic when it welcomes voices from all backgrounds. When our friends and family visit our tasting lounges, they're experiencing a space where everyone is welcomed, celebrated, and heard.
Building a Movement, One Glass at a Time
The African-American Vintners Association has become our extended family in this journey. Together, we're working to:
- Mentor the next generation of Black winemakers and vineyard operators
- Increase visibility and access to quality wines from diverse producers
- Support each other in navigating an industry that's historically been exclusionary
- Celebrate the undeniable connection between wine, culture, and community
