More Than Wine in the Glass
Family, Faith, Friends, Freedom. These aren't just words on a wall at McClain Cellars—they're the backbone of everything we do. When we decided to build this winery, we made a choice that felt radical to some in the industry: we weren't just going to make excellent wine. We were going to tear down the pretense and replace it with real hospitality.
As a Black-owned winery in California, we knew we had a unique opportunity and responsibility. We'd experienced the wine world as outsiders looking in. We'd felt the coldness of exclusivity. So we asked ourselves: what if we built something different? What if we poured with purpose?
Welcome, Friend
That's where our why comes from. Wine, at its heart, is meant to bring people together. It's meant to be shared around a table with the people you love—or with new friends you're about to make. Wine shouldn't be intimidating. It shouldn't make you feel small if you don't know the difference between a malolactic fermentation and a barrel toast (though we're happy to chat about it if you're curious).
Every person who walks through our doors deserves to feel welcome. The wine club member who's been with us since day one. The visitor trying wine for the first time. The couple celebrating an anniversary. The friends escaping the city for a weekend. The skeptic who thinks wine isn't for them. You all belong here.
Changing the Conversation
There's a lot of conversation happening right now about representation and inclusion in the wine industry. And we're grateful for that. But for us, it's not about checking boxes. It's about living our values every single day. It's about showing up as our authentic selves and creating space for others to do the same.
When we say we're tearing down pretense, we mean it. Our tasting-room staff aren't here to make you feel small—they're here to make you feel at home. Our wines aren't meant to impress a critic; they're meant to be enjoyed. Our philosophy is straightforward: good wine, real conversation, and hospitality that actually means something.

Freedom, one of our core values, takes on special meaning here. It's the freedom to ask questions without judgment. The freedom to say I don't like this one without apology. The freedom to enjoy a glass of wine however you want to enjoy it—neat, chilled, in a spritzer, with stories, in silence. The freedom to simply be when you're with us.
