There's something I've been thinking about a lot lately, and I wanted to share it with you—our wine-club family and friends who've supported McClain Cellars through the years.
The wine industry, if we're being honest, hasn't always been the most welcoming space. For decades, it's been dominated by a narrow narrative: expensive, exclusive, intimidating. A world that didn't always make room for different voices, different stories, different perspectives. But here's the thing—wine isn't supposed to be exclusive. Wine is meant to bring people together. It's meant to celebrate life's moments with family, faith, friends, and freedom.
That's why we're actively working to change that narrative at McClain Cellars.
What Inclusion in Wine Actually Means
When we talk about breaking barriers in the wine industry, we're talking about several things happening at once. We're talking about championing winemakers and vintners from all backgrounds. We're talking about creating tasting experiences in our Buellton, Solvang, Irvine, and Laguna Beach locations that feel warm and accessible—not stuffy or pretentious. We're talking about recognizing that wine appreciation doesn't require a fancy pedigree or an encyclopedic vocabulary.
Most importantly, we're talking about the idea that excellence in winemaking knows no demographic. Great wine can come from anywhere, made by anyone willing to pour their passion into the craft.
Awards as Milestones
Every award McClain Cellars receives—whether for a Cabernet, a Chardonnay, or a Pinot Noir—means something deeper to us than just a trophy on a shelf. When our wines win recognition, it's a victory for diversity. It's proof that representation matters. It's a step toward a more representative wine culture where excellence is measured by what's in the glass, not by who happens to be pouring it.
I think about the young winemaker who might see one of our awards and think, "That could be me." I think about the wine-club member from a background underrepresented in wine who feels genuinely welcomed in our tasting rooms. I think about families coming together over a bottle of McClain Cellars wine, knowing that this vineyard was built on values that reflect theirs.
Building a Welcoming Culture
Inclusivity isn't just something we put in a mission statement and move on. It's woven into how we operate every single day:
- In our tasting rooms—whether you're a seasoned wine collector or picking up a bottle for the first time, you're genuinely welcomed. Our team is here to help, not to judge.
- In our winemaking—we celebrate the diverse talents and perspectives that make our wines distinctive. Different voices lead to different, beautiful interpretations of what wine can be.
- In our community—we believe in building spaces where people from all walks of life can gather, share, and create memories together.
- In our storytelling—we're intentional about whose stories get told and centered in wine culture.
The Path Forward
There's still work to do. We know that. But what excites me is the momentum we're building together. Wine clubs like ours are becoming spaces where real diversity isn't an afterthought—it's foundational. Awards and recognition are wonderful, but they matter most when they open doors for others.
At McClain Cellars, we're committed to that vision. Every vintage we produce is a reminder that wine culture belongs to all of us. Your story, your palate, your perspective—they're all valid and valued here.
So the next time you're enjoying a glass of McClain Cellars wine—whether you're at one of our tasting locations in Buellton, Solvang, Irvine, or Laguna Beach, or sipping at home—know that you're part of something bigger. You're part of a movement toward a more inclusive, more authentic wine community.
That's what we're celebrating with every vintage.
What does inclusivity in wine mean to you? We'd love to hear your thoughts. Stop by one of our tasting rooms or reach out—we're here to listen.
